On Saturday I attended the club's prizegiving lunch which was quite an amiable affair with about 25 other members. Several of the prizes were a bit tongue in cheek, like 'Best Capsize' and 'Best Singer' (on the water), but others like 'Best New Member' and 'Biggest New Tourer' were a little more serious.
There is already a 'Highest Mileage' cup which was won by the club's Chairman with a phenomenal 1,100 miles paddled in the year, and apparently for the umpteenth year in succession. Another award went to the club's President and his wife for having achieved three, (count them) five thousand mile, gold awards over a lifetime's paddling. This award was from the BCU who had to inaugurate a new Platinum award to fill the bill. They were the first to be presented with this award, and I would think, probably the last.
At the other end of the mileage scale, the award that I thought I might stand a chance with, the details of which had been published on the club' s notice board a few months ago, was one to be given for the highest increase in mileage on the previous year, as I had more than tripled my mileage from the previous year. However, the awards committee seem to have had second thoughts as that particular award appears to have sunk without trace as no mention was made of it. Another award for the highest mileage by a new member was, I thought, out of my reach as another newbie to my knowledge, had already put in 500 miles. It was something of a surprise then when my name came up for the that one. Apparently the new guy wasn't so new after all, and my modest 300 miles took the prize.
I was really rather pleased with that and quaffed a couple of beers on the strength of it. Strangely there seemed to be a couple of 'pointed' comments, made just out of earshot, which I didn't quite get as I took my leave of the party. Perhaps they didn't think the 'right' person won, dunno, but I'll still be eligible as a newbie next year as well, and although my target is the 500 mile Gold that's the sort of mileage they will have to aim for to win, just as I would have to aim for the 1,100+ to wrest the mileage cup from the present incumbent. Now there's a thought...
