Not Two-Star Standard

The debacle of the two-star course has left me feeling rather unenthusiastic for boating in general. So much so that I parked the kayak and have left it unused for nearly a month while I smarted under the 'not fit for purpose' branding. Leaving aside the canoeing, I really didn't think I was all 'that' bad. On the kayak trip I think I put up a rather better performance than the other two candidates, but they got through. I know that I'm not very fast across the water but I feel that is probably due poor technique, which I had hoped would be improved by the course, but that didn't happen. Right at the moment there's no real prospect of getting through the four-day DW without falling foul of the ten hour cut-off of the first two days.

Nevertheless, on Thursday I took the kayak to the Wey for a short two-mile trip just to start getting back into the rhythm, only intending to do the short leg from New Haw and back. Wobbly at first as it usually is after a lay-off, I got into the groove fairly quickly and it turned into an enjoyable session. A quick turn around at the boat club and I was back with current and flowing along quite well. The Garmin showed that the overall speed for the two miles was just outside the average I’d need to get home within the cut-off time, and I had an average moving speed of 4.2 mph.

Now I know that I can’t extrapolate two miles onto thirty-four miles and expect it to work for three/four days, but it was ’almost’ fast enough and at least was more encouraging. I don’t have the time to get out again for the next week but I do have to get on with the training and try to find a way through the 5 mph barrier.

At the last count the weight has dropped to 13st 3, which is going in the right direction and puts my BMI into the 'Normal' catagory.
